Pottery Barn Knock Off Sign With a Twist of Lime
The board and batten hallway project is coming right along! I have to take a three-day break from it all since I’ll be working (my real job that brings home the bacon) this weekend.
So far, I can check off the list for the new knobs, lighting and grasscloth wallpaper.
How did that go?
Let’s just say, I’m definitely not qualified to give any sort of tutorial on hanging wallpaper. Thank goodness the hardest part is over and all that’s left to do is the board and batten and a new cover for the air return.
I also have a couple of updates to our kitchen that I couldn’t wait to share.
You might remember our kitchen drop station area from the post on how to make a magnetic chalkboard and Instagram gallery. I’ve been wanting to make a DIY vintage sign to go above the shelves but wasn’t sure what I wanted it to say.
I was looking through my Pinterest boards and rediscovered this refreshments sign from Pottery Barn.
Since we don’t have anything red in our kitchen, I made a knock-off of the Pottery Barn sign but gave it a twist of lime by painting it green.
In the art of reusing and repurposing, I took the Christmas Tree Farm sign that was made from our front door’s brass kick plate, turned it over and made a new sign. So, come next Christmas, I can just flip it back over and use the other side again.
After painting the kick plate with green latex paint, I made a template for the text using Eurostile font. I’m not sure the exact color of the paint I used, but Miss Mustard Seed’s Boxwood is pretty close.
Here is the link to the image above.
UPDATE: I added the cropped version of the Refreshments sign font in this link. Print each image and tape it together. To make sure each page aligns perfectly, I hold them flat against a window as I tape the pages together. The window acts as a “lightbox”.
I printed it out and traced over it using the same technique as the Charleston sign tutorial.
I’ve found that Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint works well for the white outline because it has such good coverage. I filled in the letters with acrylic craft paint after brushing on a crackle medium so the letters would look chippy. After it dried overnight, I gave the sign a light sanding to let some of the metal underneath show through.
I also replaced the galvanized metal magazine holder with a wire basket organizer from Wisteria Catalog.
We are using it as a homework station so there’s a place for all the pencils, scissors, and paperwork right next to the kitchen table. It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but I found a coupon at Retailmenot.com for 15% off.
Knowing me, if I set foot inside of Homegoods or Pottery Barn Outlet looking for something similar, I’d walk out spending twice as much money on other things I don’t need. I’m much better off shopping online.
Thanks for the feature! You made my day!

This sign is completely awesome. Love it! The crackle finish and the patina of the sign are just perfect!
Thank you! The crackle finish was a little experiment that (thankfully) turned out the way I was hoping it would. Glad you like the sign!

Came across you on Tater Tots and Jellos Link Up party and I just wanted to say how much I really like this. An old sign has been on my To Do list for the longest time so thanks for the tutorial!
I love that sign….more than the original! And I remember pinning your Ikea cabinet awhile back, so I definitely went and clicked on it 🙂
Thank you so much, Gretchen!
Visiting from the TaterTots and Jello link up party! I love your sign. I also Love the drink carrier. Where did you find it? I have been looking for one EVERYWHERE. The one I found on Pottery Barn is on back order. Boo! Good luck with your blog! I have really enjoyed looking around!
Thanks, Stacy! I found the basket at Bed Bath and Beyond, but it was in the bathroom accessory section, of all places. Thanks for stopping by!
I love it! I think it’s BETTER than Pottery Barn’s! Thanks for sharing it with us! Have a blessed week!

Love the twist of lime 🙂 I want to knock one off!
Super cute girl! I love the twist you gave it with the fresh, pretty green. And how smart are you flipping your Xmas sign? Love that thriftiness and ingenuity 😉 Oh, and the hall project is looking marvelous too.

Adore the sign! And, I also went over and clicked on your project. Good luck!
Thank you, Carla for the vote! Keeping my fingers crossed!
That sign is so awesome!! I love that you used a kickplate for it. It really adds to the vintage feel of it.
Your sign looks so good 🙂 But mostly I LOVE the peek at the grass cloth. It looks like it has been a lot of work. But it will be SO worth it when it’s done.
