Progress with the Modern Farmhouse Cottage Guest Shed: One Room Challenge Week 5

| | |

Welcome! I’m so glad you’re stopping by to check on the progress on how we’re converting a shed into a living space for my stepdaughter and guests!

I can’t believe we’re officially in the home stretch!

When we left off last week, the guest shed looked like this.

We've almost completed converting our shed into a living space. We added a built-in bed, a kitchenette, a live edge bar for eating. All that's left is decorating!

It was beginning to look like an actual bedroom but I was freaking out because we still had so much to do. Not to mention, we’re doing 100% the work ourselves.

After taking a couple days of a much-needed break, we got it in gear over the weekend and finished the built-in bed and cabinets.

The cabinets were built in place using 3/4″ cabinet grade birch plywood. They’re faced with 1 X 3’s. The doors were made with the same plywood and the x-detail was made by ripping down 1/4″ luan to 2″ strips.

The cabinet closest to the door will be a little kitchenette-in-a-closet. It will hold a microwave, a dorm fridge and the cutest little sink you’ve ever seen.

The cabinet on the other side of the room will hold clothes and stores the portable air conditioner when not in use. The question I get asked the most is, “Will the room have a toilet?”. Well, not yet since it’s not in the budget. But we planned ahead and made the cabinet deep enough and installed a plug-in to add a composting toilet later.

Earlier this week, I shared how we made a sliding TV cover out of reclaimed wood.

And this, my friends, is how the cottage guest shed looks at week 5 of the One Room Challenge.

My husband, Jason, made a pair of modern farmhouse steel shelf brackets to hold some reclaimed barnwood shelves. We have the brackets for sale in our Etsy shop.

I’m so happy with how the built-ins turned out that I can’t stand it! Jason out-did himself. We have a  tutorial showing how you can make the built-in bed and cabinets.

The x-detail barndoors from my mood board were the inspiration for the cabinet doors. What looks like drawers beneath the bed is actually a cover that lifts to reveal the trundle bed.

We added some architectural interest to the beam. We still have another surprise up our sleeves with the beam for the reveal. The reclaimed wood art that you see on the back wall hides the TV cabinet. I love how the random colors in the wood mimic the variation of colors in the luxury vinyl plank flooring.

Here’s where we’ve been so far and what we still have to do in order to convert our shed into a living space…

Week One:

Design plans for the garden shed that will be transformed into a bedroom / guest cottage
Before pictures and digital after pictures

Week Two:

Remove siding and old windows
Fix prior construction issue by pushing walls out 1-1/2″ to prevent intrusion of water
Install new windows
Paint door
Install new keypad lock
Place new OSB on exterior walls
Install new windows
Paint dresser
Reconfigure wiring
Install insulation

Week Three:

Finish wiring for sockets, switches, and lighting
Finish insulation on the ceiling
Apply shiplap to walls and ceiling
Install ceiling lights
Make curtains
Paint shiplap

Week 4:

Ardex the subfloor to level it
Vinyl wood-look plank the floors
Replace roof
Build the bar that goes below the large window
Paint barstools (I had to buy taller ones instead)
Hang curtains
Build shutters and window boxes (a spontaneous project that got thrown on the list)

Week 5:

Make the pallet wood art
Frost the windows on the door with 3M film
Plumbing for the sink in the kitchenette cabinet
Beef up the beam and add some architectural interest
Build/weld the metal and wood shelf to go above the coffee station
Build the cabinets and trundle bed
Baseboard
Paint the cabinets and trundle bed
Make the coffee table
Install cabinet shelves and sink
Install sconces that go above bed
All that’s left to do is build the wider steps and decorate.

Join me next week for the reveal!

  1. Seriously, this is so AMAZING! I can’t wait to see the final reveal. I love the floors, the walls, the cute doors and the shelves. I love the closets and the tv covers…I love it all! You guys are so creative. This is going to be fabulous. I can tell already! Hugs, CoCo

  2. I love this make over. Wish I had something similar for a home office and hide away. You did a beautiful job!

    1. Thank you, Tammy! I’ve found myself wanting to hang out there myself and I’ve really considered making it my office space once my step daughter goes to college in just a short time.

    1. Thanks, Cassie! You’re welcome anytime. We can sit and drink wine and finally relax once this is all over. 🙂

  3. Can you tell me what type of hardware you used for the drawer pulls and closet doors. I love them and would like them in my new kitchen.
    Thank you!

    1. Thank you! I’m really happy with the hardware. I got them from D Lawless Hardware. Everything I looked at on their site is reasonably priced and you get free shipping if your order is $50. The rectangular drawer cup pulls are here: http://www.dlawlesshardware.com/manor-bin-cup-pull.html
And here’s the link for the door knobs: http://www.dlawlesshardware.com/1-1-4inch-ironcraft-knob-with-backplate.html
They are from 2 different manufacturers so they’re not an exact match but very close. The cup pulls have a little bit more copper highlights to them than the knobs. If you wanted to add a little more copper highlights to them, you can get Rub N Buff in Spanish Copper from Hobby Lobby and lightly brush it on the edges: http://www.hobbylobby.com/Crafts-Hobbies/Stencils-Craft-Paints/Leafing/Spanish-Copper-Rub'n-Buff/p/1417
I’m happy with them as-is. I’ll have close up pictures of them in the reveal. Hope that helps!

  4. I am loving this whole space! The sliding TV cover is awesome. We were going to build a headboard with a similar design for my ORC but were too short on time. I can’t wait to see this reveal!

    1. Thanks, Roxanne! I love the headboard idea. There’s so many things I wish we had time to add to the room but if you’re like me, a room is never really finished.
