Cheap and Easy DIY Wooden Poster Hangers
You like simple, right?
When I say simple, I mean minimal DIY skills needed.
And after Christmas shopping has wiped out the bank account, cheap is a huge plus too.
In this post, I’ll be showing you how to make simple and inexpensive wooden poster hangers, like the ones I used in Taylor’s rustic & industrial bedroom.
I’ll also be sharing where I found some black and white maps on Etsy that are almost identical to Restoration Hardware’s lithograph maps.
My favorite part of this project is that the wooden poster hangers can be used for so many types of artwork. My wheels are turning on what type of artwork I’ll be hanging next.
One of my readers commented on how she had an old map she wanted to hang and I believe this would be a perfect way to display it!
Before I get into the tutorial, let me tell you how much I love the vintage-inspired black and white maps I found on Etsy. They’re just the right touch for a rustic, industrial bedroom and a much cheaper version of Restoration Hardware’s lithographs. GeoArtShed also has a special for (3) maps for $79.00.
I chose New York, Minneapolis, and Washington, DC because Taylor has visited all 3 of these cities.

So, besides the artwork you plan to hang, the supplies you need are:
Staple gun and 1/4″ staples
D-rings
Oil-rubbed bronze paint/primer (optional) to paint the D-rings
I used 1-1/2″ x 3/8″ thick lath wood. Lath is the narrow strip of wood that forms the foundation behind plaster walls. We got a bundle from a neighbor that was remodeling their 100-year-old home. I learned long ago, when given the chance, always use salvaged wood!
If you can’t source any lath wood nearby, you can buy it on Etsy here. The other option is to buy 1/2″ X 2″x 4′ craft board at the home improvement store. We ended up using the lath strips again for our DIY magnetic command center board.
I cut the salvaged wood strips 2″ wider than the poster and gave them a quick sanding and a coat of wax before I used them.
The twine is optional. I like the simplicity of hanging the lithographs from the D-rings. Plus, they never get crooked this way. The perfectionist in me gives this a thumbs up.
Once, you’ve gathered all your supplies, the rest is super simple. Just staple your poster to the back of the lath strips and add D-rings. These posters are printed on thick paper. If your paper is thin, add a strip of masking tape to strengthen it before you staple.
So, tell me…what kind of artwork would you use these wooden poster hangers for?
