DIY South Carolina Map Art- State Pride Tour
Hi everyone! It’s day #2 of a week-long State Pride Tour hosted by Beckie of Infarrantly Creative where 30 talented bloggers get to share a project that represents their home state.
If you’ve been following along on the blog hop, then you got to see the adorable Blue Dog Sharpie Coasters made by Jaderbomb of Louisiana. If you need to catch up on all the other amazing projects shared this week, you can head on over to Beckie’s blog to see what you’ve missed.
Now, it’s my turn to represent the Palmetto state that’s known for their beaches and peaches, South Carolina!
Today I’m sharing a quick and easy map art project that uses the lyrics to one of my favorite songs. Since the website I bought the map scrapbook paper from has all 50 states, you can customize this project for your own home state. Just type the state you’re looking for in their search box.
A couple of weeks ago, I got the exciting news that Silhouette America would be sending me a Cameo. It’s been on my wish list forever since it will make some future projects I have planned so much easier.
As soon as it arrived, I loaded the software and came up with a design using the Pacifico font and the lyrics to James Taylor’s ‘Carolina in My Mind’. James may have been from North Carolina, but I’m pretty sure he was singing to us South Carolina folks, too. 😉 For the shape of the state, I used the Stateface font. You can download the design I made by clicking on this link.
I ended up making my art two different ways…one that I could put in a frame and the other wrapped around a canvas frame. Sometimes I can’t decide until I see the finished project.
To transfer the vinyl letters to the map, I used painters tape. Looks messy but it worked like a charm.
I like the way the white frame brings out the lettering, so that one’s a keeper.
Working with the Silhouette is totally new to me, so if you have any tips or tricks, please share!
Here’s a few of my favorite map projects:
Decoupaged Map Crate
Magnetic Map Trays
Map Clock
And if you love Charleston, SC as much as I do, you might like this vintage Charleston sign tutorial:
Tomorrow, Jen from Tatertots & Jello will be sharing her New York State project. She is super talented, so I can’t wait to see what she makes.
Don’t forget, on Monday the 23rd, Beckie will be hosting a state pride linky party, so you have the chance to submit your own state projects on Infarrantly Creative.
Sharing this with some of my favorite blogs such as:
Hi Tricia,
I found your blog through Home Talk and I have literally spent all morning poring over your past posts. I’ve sketched out a complete redo of my linen and hall closet – I just moved in, so they’re basically a jumble right now. I’ve also already placed two online orders for things I now just have to have (like the Rubbermaid All Access bins and shelf dividers). You’ve been added to my pinterest, feedly, instagram, and facebook. I am officially obsessed with your blog! Haha, just kidding, I’m not creepy. 🙂 Oh, and you’re in SC, which I visited three times in the past 2 years and fell in love with. Charleston is my soul city. So…even more reason to be obsessed. 🙂 Okay, enough geeking out over you right now. Just know you have a new reader! 🙂
Oh…I LOVE LOVE this Tricia! Of course as a South Carolinian I am a wee bit partial! 😉 Turned out fabulous! Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Funday!
Wait, what’s the sitch on that dresser? Did I miss that tutorial?
I don’t have a tutorial…yet. But I’ll make sure I’ll do one soon. I did this with latex paint before I knew about chalk paint.
Thank you for such a great idea! Beautiful display…love the blue fan!
Thanks Jenny! I loved that blue fan so much I bought another one almost identical. It reminds of the one my grandad had in his workshop.
One of my dearest friends is a Carolina girl, and this makes me think of her. Lovely project!
What an adorable frame and art piece. Thanks for the source of the scrapbook paper!
Love love me some SC! I love the scrapbook paper. Will have to check it out! Happy Fall from Pickens
, SC!
Thanks Debbie! We’re almost neighbors.
Love the project being an ancient Carolina girl, but was disappointed not to find Aiken on the map.
I wonder why they left it out because Aiken’s a larger town than some other ones listed on there. Hello from one SC girl to another!
So cool! I love this hop because it goes right along with a project I was already working on for my South Carolina love!
Good timing! Can’t wait to see what you make, Sonya.
Carolina is always on my mind 🙂 The map looks great!
I’m so jealous you got a Cameo! It’s been on my wishlist for a year now!
Thanks, Erin! I couldn’t believe it when I got the email, and I’m so grateful. I’m going to be doing some glass etching, pillow covers and “vintage” signs soon.
Love it!
And I think General Johnson was singing to us SC girls when he sang “Carolina Girls”.
No doubt, Southern Gal!
