Welcome! I’m so glad you’re stopping by to check on the progress on the dilapidated shed that we’re turning into a cottage guest shed and bedroom for my step daughter.
I can’t believe we’re officially in the home stretch!
When we left off last week, the guest shed looked like this.
It was beginning to look like an actual bedroom but I was freaking out because we still had so much to do. Not to mention, we’re doing 100% the work ourselves.
After taking a couple days of a much-needed break, we got it in gear over the weekend and finished the built-in bed and cabinets.
The cabinets were built in place using 3/4″ cabinet grade birch plywood. They’re faced with 1 X 3’s. The doors were made with the same plywood and the x-detail was made by ripping down 1/4″ luan to 2″ strips.
The cabinet closest to the door will be a little kitchenette-in-a-closet. It will hold a microwave, a dorm fridge and the cutest little sink you’ve ever seen.
The cabinet on the other side of the room will hold clothes and stores the portable air conditioner when not in use. The question I get asked the most is, “Will the room have a toilet?”. Well, not yet since it’s not in the budget. But we planned ahead and made the cabinet deep enough and installed a plug-in to add a composting toilet later.
Earlier this week, I shared how we made a sliding TV cover out of reclaimed wood.
And this, my friends, is how the cottage guest shed looks at week 5 of the One Room Challenge.
I’m so happy with how the built-ins turned out that I can’t stand it! Jason out-did himself. The x-detail barndoors from my mood board were the inspiration for the cabinet doors. What looks like drawers beneath the bed is actually a cover that lifts to reveal the trundle bed.
We added some architectural interest to the beam. We still have another surprise up our sleeves with the beam for the reveal. The reclaimed wood art that you see on the back wall hides the TV cabinet. I love how the random colors in the wood mimic the variation of colors in the luxury vinyl plank flooring.
Here’s where we’ve been so far and what we still have to do…
Join me next week for the reveal!
