Design Plans for the Small Dormer Bedroom

| |

Let me start by telling you why this small dormer bedroom re-design is so special to me.

This room represents to me the beginning of a love story.

At first, it was my love affair with my new house but then things changed drastically for the better.

And this is how the story goes…

Girl gets brave enough to date again. In walks in this 6’3″, bearded man that totally got her when she spoke of things like miter saws, shiplap, and watching re-runs of Fixer Upper. Guy helps girl follow her dreams of restarting her blog by convincing her to dive back into the design and remodel process. Together, they finish her oldest son’s room before he returns from his trip to Minneapolis. Little did she know how talented this man was. Little did she know, it was in her stars to fall in love with him during this journey.?

Did you get all the feels? Boy, did I ever.

They say your soulmate challenges you to your fullest potential.

This is where our challenges began.

Taylor’s room is only 97 square feet. We started with pistachio green walls, popcorn ceilings, and an oddly shaped floorplan. This made it difficult to design the furniture layout.

The goals for the small dormer bedroom re-design:

1. Make room more functional as a bedroom and office space for Taylor.

2. Make the small room feel bigger by utilizing the nook in the gable with built-ins.

3. Brighten it up and modernize by covering up the popcorn ceiling and adding new light fixtures.

4. “Masculinize” the room by changing the pistachio green paint color to a medium gray and by adding rustic meets industrial vibe with a planked wood wall, a Restoration Hardware inspired desk and vintage accessories.

5. Keep it all within a budget of $750 and a time limit of less than a month before Taylor got home from Minneapolis.

Absolutely do-able!

Here’s a few pictures of how I envisioned the space:

I used the pictures above to draw my inspiration and create my design plan.

What I love about these rooms is the coziness they portray with the combination of rustic, wood planked walls behind the bed, bright white planked ceilings, and space-saving built-ins.

These are the accessories I had in mind to give it the rustic, industrial vibe that I was going for (some products contain affiliate links):

I’m really excited to show everyone how easily popcorn ceilings can be covered up in our next post!

By the way, I’m thinking of opening an Etsy shop within the next few months but would like some advice from everyone. I’m wanting to sell some things that I’ve already made from my DIY projects list and also some new products.

What would you like to see in my Etsy shop?

Thanks for your input! 🙂

    1. Thank you, John! The price for the wall planks has gone up to $1.57 per square foot since we covered the ceiling. Here’s the link to the pack of planks from Lowes: 3.5-in 8-ft Natural Pine Tongue and Groove Wall Plank (Coverage Area: 14-sq ft). This is the link to the tutorial: https://www.simplicityinthesouth.com/the-easiest-way-to-cover-a-popcorn-ceiling/ We painted the ones on the ceiling and stained some for the wall behind the bed. I hope this helps!

  1. Love the design plan – those beds are soo crazy cosy looking – curl up and read all day!
