I’m sure my neighbor thought I was crazy when I texted her at 8:30 the other night asking if I could have a couple of wire hangers. Most neighbors ask for a cup of sugar, but the crazy craft lady next door asks for clothes hangers. When the creative mood strikes, you just have to go with it. Today, I’m sharing how I made the bunny boxwood wreath from my Easter decor vignette out of greenery from the craft store, floral wire, and clothes hangers. You will also need a set of pliers and wire cutters.
One bunch of greenery (item #278184 from Hobby Lobby) and two hangers are enough to make a 16″ tall bunny, just like the one that sits inside this 25″ X 21″ frame.
Hobby Lobby didn’t have any artificial boxwood, so this is the closest I could find. I wanted to use real boxwood like I used in my boxwood wreath tutorial, but our hedges were trimmed back in the fall. ***Update (3-17-13): I recently found this simple tutorial on how to preserve boxwood that I will try the next time I make a wreath.**
The stems on this greenery are 4 1/2″ long and are solid plastic. This makes it easy to put on the wire form without it falling apart or fraying like silk greenery would.
The best way I found to cut the wire is to hold the hanger with your wire cutters and bend it back and forth till it breaks. I knew that I wanted the rabbit’s body to be six inches in diameter, so I wrapped the wire around a bucket and twisted the ends. The head is about the size of a 20 ounce can.
Use pliers to finish off twisting the wire tightly.
I ended up trimming the ends of the bunny ears and made hooks by using pliers. I bent the hooks in opposite directions to keep the ears from flopping forward.
Gather two sprigs of the greenery and attach them to the wire form with floral wire. There is a piece of floral wire towards the bottom of the sprig and one towards the top. They are hidden underneath the leaves about an inch and a half from each end. It helps to use the pliers to twist the floral wire tightly and then snip the excess with the wire cutters. Overlap the next two sprigs of greenery about an inch and a half.
Once the body, head and ears are covered with greenery, attach the two circles with floral wire and clamp the ears on with the pliers. Touch up any of the hanger that is showing with craft paint.
Tie a bow around his neck and text your neighbor to thank her for generosity.
What are you looking forward to the most once it’s springtime?
