How to Distress Furniture with Milk Paint and Wet Rag Sanding

How to distress furniture using MMS milk paint and wet rag sanding

Thanks for all the sweet comments on my balustrade coffee table! I think it’s the beginnings of a (good) addiction.  As promised, I wanted to show you a different way of distressing furniture. It’s a technique that I’ve never heard of until I went to a painting class at the Haven Conference in August. Maybe I just live a sheltered life, but I never knew you could “sand” with a wet rag instead of sandpaper.

Restoration Hardware Knock Off Balustrade Coffee Table

DIY Restoration Hardware Knock Off Balustrade Coffee Table instructions

After living with our small and wobbly coffee table for the last ten years, it was time for something more substantial and beefier. I’m thrilled with how our new coffee table turned out and even more happy that I was able to build it myself for $50.00 in materials. Most of the wood I used for this project was given to my husband after he cleaned out a building for a client.  I’ve already proclaimed

Amazing Apple Dapple Cake with a Caramel-Pecan Glaze

Amazing Apple Dapple Cake with a caramel-pecan sauce

I hope everyone enjoyed their Labor Day weekend! I don’t post recipes very often, but when I do you better believe they’re my absolute favorites. Mrs. Spoone’s Apple Dapple cake is a legend where I work. The few times a year when my friend, Veronica, brings her mother’s cake to work, the news spreads like wild-fire. We arrange our work schedules so we can fit coffee and Apple Dapple into our shift. Thank you, Freida Spoone,

Knocking Down a Wall and Opening Up the Kitchen

Knocking down a wall to open up the kitchen

Out of all the DIY projects we’ve done to make our small 1980’s ranch feel more open and updated, the one that has made the most dramatic difference is opening up the kitchen to the living room. Before, the living room felt dark and cramped and the kitchen felt closed off from where our family spent the majority of our time. By removing a seven foot wide section of the wall, we were able to visually enlarge

Ikea Bookshelves Makeover with Wallpaper and Paint

Makeover Ikea bookshelves with wallpaper and paint

Boy, I’ve missed y’all! I had to take a little blog-break so I could soak in the last little bit of summer vacation with my boys before school started back. I went to the Haven Conference at the beginning of the month (which was fantastic, by the way) and had the opportunity to take a painting class with Marian of Miss Mustard Seed and Shaunna of Imperfectly Perfect. This has led to a furniture painting

8 Great Craft Closets: Organization Ideas

8 Great Craft Closet Ideas

Remember at the beginning of the year when I was determined to get all of my hall closets in order? I managed to get two out of the four complete (see here and here), but my craft closet has been the most disorganized out of all of them so I’ve avoided it for the past six months. Ah! I can finally say I’ve started tackling the monstrosity that hid behind that closet door. The full
