{Room Reveal} Our Two Youngest Boys’ Shared Bedroom

I could really kick myself for not taking pictures of our home when I first moved in here after my husband and I got married in 1999. Mr. Simplicity bought this house a month before we met on a blind date. The bedroom that I am showing you used to be Brad’s room mate’s room. It was painted dark navy and then sponge painted with gold craft paint.

It’s come a long way, Baby! It’s gone from being Taylor’s room (who is now 17), then it became Taylor and Parker’s shared bedroom. Now Parker and Mason (ages 11 and 6, respectively) share this bedroom. Even though Taylor will be going to college next fall, I think that the younger boys will still share this room. Our middle son, Parker, has high-functioning Autism,
so he likes familiarity and routine. I think that separating these two would just throw him for a loop.

Knowing how quickly our boys’ interests change from week to week, I didn’t want to decorate their room around their favorite cartoon character or movie. Instead, I used color as the theme…navy and orange.

I got the inspiration for the red-wagon-turned-toy-box from Cathe of Just Something I Made.
The cabinet between their beds is an Ikea PS cabinet. This is what it looked like before I gave it an aged steel finish inspired by a piece of furniture that I found in a Restoration Hardware catalog.

I made the upholstered headboards and added nail head trim. The striped pillows were made from this fabric. The off-white quilts are from Amazon.com. The boys have used them for six months now and they have held up well. The navy quilts at the end of the bed were purchased from Target a while back, but they are sold out. I just have it folded to the solid side. I also gave the plain white roman shades a makeover with 2 1/4″ wide navy grosgrain ribbon from Griffith Gardens.

I made their initials above their beds with fabric, a letter from the craft store, Luan board, 1×1’s, and, you guessed it, Mod Podge.

You can click on this link to see how I made a similar monogrammed board to cover up our doorbell in the hallway.

I debated for months on what I needed to put on the large wall above Mason’s bed. I finally found this large laminated map. It adds just enough color and it gave me a direction to go for the rest of the room. You know I’ve been a little map crazy these days. The blue trays are painted with Krylon’s Peekaboo Blue.

I think the “No Wake” photograph between their beds is quite appropriate. I used Taylor’s Photoshopping know-how and had him change the color of the picture from red to orange to match the headboards.

Across the room from the boys’ beds is a chalkboard wall, the map clock that I made , and a place to hang their artwork.
I found this “dustless chalk” from Amazon.com. Although it is not totally dustless, there is a noticeable difference between this chalk and what I found in the stores.

I rescued their bookcase from the storage building. I had Brad add the crown molding to the top of it. He also cut out the beadboard for the back of the book shelf. I painted the beadboard back with Annie Sloan’s Chalk Board paint in Provence. On the bottom shelf is the map crate that I made.

I’m starting them a globe collection. Or maybe it’s for me. 🙂
The large globe was purchased from Vintage Rhino on Etsy.
They are offering my readers 15% off their purchase! Just go to http://www.etsy.com/shop/TheVintageRhino and give them the coupon code ‘SIMPLICITY’ when you checkout.

I feel pretty privileged since there are no girls allowed (except Mom) in here.

In the midst of this room re-do, Mason, who is six, asked me, “Why are you making my room pretty? Are you doing it for the blob?”
“Yes, honey, I’m doing it for you…and the blob.”

  9. I love what you did in this room Tricia! I am coming back to visit it and check out all your fabulous details – we just moved our boys into the same room a few days ago and in searching for shared room inspiration! Found lots here! I love the boat prop – I picked one up at a garage sale recently for the boys room too!

    1. Thanks, Krista! My husband saved that old prop for me when he changed to a new one. It’s actually fiberglass so I painted it with copper spray paint and aged it with craft paint. Can’t wait to how you decorate their room!

  10. I just discovered your blog and I keep coming back to this page because this is a GREAT KIDS BEDROOM!!! I love all of the ideas, especially the bookshelf and the jar of toy cars, but will you please give a few pointers on how you made it (or where you bought it)?

    1. Thank you, Shan! I agree, ideas for boy’s rooms (like clothes) aren’t as easy to find as it is for girls. I’m so glad you stopped by!

  12. Love the room!! We just turned our garage into a large bedroom for our two boys and I’m still working on the decorating part b/c it’s so big! Love the colors and we were just in Ikea the other day looking at that same piece for between their beds (they only come in red and white now). Where did you get the large rug that goes between their beds? Thanks!!

    1. Our boys would be ecstatic if they a big bedroom like that! Your boys are so lucky! The rug came from a local carpet shop. It was a remnant rug and they already had the edges bound. It looks like sisal from a distance, but it is easy to clean (unlike sisal). I got a comment from a lady the other day that ended up buying the white ikea cabinet and was able to get the same look. I’m pretty sure she sanded and primed it with gray metal primer before following the rest of the steps. Good luck with your boy’s room!!

  13. I do not even know how I stumbled upon your blog but..SERIOUSLY!!!! You do such great stuff in a small space. WHO CARES!!! if your home is small (which, I don’t think so, I think it’s perfect) it is so so neat, pretty, adorable and well cared for. Excellent job!!

  14. Ok where do I start: love the locker cabinet, love the orange, love the chalkboard paint. Nice job you’ve done there, that room is gorgeous! I’ve got this linked to my children’s room makeover post too today, for fabulous DIY kids spaces!

  15. Love it!! I stumbled across this post and it caught my eye as I have an Ikea PS cabinet that I love everything about except the colour. Imagine my delight when I saw that you placed it between two twin beds, just as I am planning to do when I relocate my twins. Thank you for the visual – it looks great.

In one further freaky-deaky coincidence, I also have a 17 year-old son named Taylor … and it is his room that will soon belong to his younger brothers. LOL!

    Thank you 🙂

  16. I love it. My younger boy (now 8,5) ehn he was six and starting to learn letters and words at school, asked me for an own ‘block’ where he could share everything he learned.

  18. Nice job! I love everything you’ve done in the room. I’m currently in the process of changing out my son’s nautical room to orange, blue & brown. So I pinned a lot of your ideas (thanks for sharing your links!)

  19. I love the room, especially the way the colors work together. I love that your son called it the blob. My kids have asked me about my “blob” and their reaction was, “That’s weird, Mom.” (They are 7 and 5.) Very nice work with the room!

  20. Oh.my.word. This is stunning! You did such a fantastic job. Now I have even more ideas for my son’s room….which is moving at a snail’s pace. Maybe I just need you to come over and work on it since you are clearly fantastic at getting stuff completed!

  22. Beyond great! I love the monograms over their beds, and the bookshelves with globes, pails and blue background. Really lovely!

  23. I LOVE the room, Tricia! You did a fantastic job! What you did to the Ikea footlocker is genius! I think that’s my favorite part! Great job!

    1. I think it’s my favorite thing also! A close second to the bookcase. It’s funny that both of these pieces of furniture sat out in our storage building for the past 4 years. I wish I had done it a long time ago!

  24. This room is great! We are in the midst of some room makeovers for our boys so I’ve been looking for inspiration. There are aspects from both rooms that our guys love and we are definitely working with a very limited budget. So thank you for sharing!

    1. I saw the title of your blog and I knew that I MUST check it out. I’m so glad that I did because I love your style! I’m also glad that I saw your Etsy shop b/c I found somethings that I want. I need to hurry up and purchase them before they get gone!

  25. I just discovered your blog and couldn’t help but go back to read all the other posts. You have great ideas that don’t break the bank which are what “real” people can relate to. Keep it up girl!!!

    1. Absolutely! That’s my favorite thing to do…find something that is out of my price range and figure out how to make it with my measly budget! It makes it more rewarding in the end. So glad you found me!

  26. I am so impressed Tricia!!! That looks awesome! I have triplets who share a room. I wish I had your gift!

  27. Your boys bedroom is great looking. I love that it will take the kids from elementary school to teenager very easily. Love the locker and the chalkboard wall.

    1. Thanks, Gretchen! I had fun decorating it. I tried to convince Taylor to let me do the chalkboard wall when this was his room 6 years ago and he wouldn’t let me. Boys! I didn’t ask the younger ones before I did it, but they use it all the time. I forgot to mention that I ended up buying some dustless chalk. I’ll have to add the link later. It helps.
