I could really kick myself for not taking pictures of our home when I first moved in here after my husband and I got married in 1999. Brad had bought this house a month before we met on a blind date. The bedroom that I am showing you used to be Brad’s room mate’s room. It was painted dark navy and then sponge painted with gold craft paint.
It’s come a long way, Baby! It’s gone from being Taylor’s room (who is now 17), then it became Taylor and Parker’s shared bedroom. Now Parker and Mason (ages 11 and 6, respectively) share this bedroom. Even though Taylor will be going to college next fall, I think that the younger boys will still share this room. Our middle son, Parker, has high-functioning Autism,
so he likes familiarity and routine. I think that separating these two would just throw him for a loop.

Knowing how quickly our boys’ interests change from week to week, I didn’t want to decorate their room around their favorite cartoon character or movie. Instead, I used color as the theme…navy and orange.
I got the inspiration for the red-wagon-turned-toy-box from Cathe of Just Something I Made.
The cabinet between their beds is an Ikea PS cabinet. This is what it looked like before I gave it an aged steel finish inspired by a piece of furniture that I found in a Restoration Hardware catalog.

Here is the tutorial on how I did the faux rivet detail.
I made the upholstered headboards and added nail head trim. The striped pillows were made from this fabric. The off-white quilts are from Amazon.com. The boys have used them for six months now and they have held up well. The navy quilts at the end of the bed were purchased from Target a while back, but they are sold out. I just have it folded to the solid side. I also gave the plain white roman shades a makeover with 2 1/4″ wide navy grosgrain ribbon from Griffith Gardens.
I made their initials above their beds with fabric, a letter from the craft store, Luan board, 1×1′s, and, you guessed it, Mod Podge.
I debated for months on what I needed to put on the large wall above Mason’s bed. I finally found this large laminated map. It adds just enough color and it gave me a direction to go for the rest of the room. You know I’ve been a little map crazy these days. The blue trays are painted with Krylon’s Peekaboo Blue.
I think the “No Wake” photograph between their beds is quite appropriate. I used Taylor’s Photoshopping know-how and had him change the color of the picture from red to orange to match the headboards.
Across the room from the boys’ beds is a chalkboard wall, the map clock that I made , and a place to hang their artwork.
I found this “dustless chalk” from Amazon.com. Although it is not totally dustless, there is a noticeable difference between this chalk and what I found in the stores.
I rescued their bookcase from the storage building. I had Brad add the crown molding to the top of it. He also cut out the beadboard for the back of the book shelf. I painted the beadboard back with Annie Sloan’s Chalk Board paint in Provence. On the bottom shelf is the map crate that I made.
I’m starting them a globe collection. Or maybe it’s for me.

I love it. My younger boy (now 8,5) ehn he was six and starting to learn letters and words at school, asked me for an own ‘block’ where he could share everything he learned.
Love it!! I stumbled across this post and it caught my eye as I have an Ikea PS cabinet that I love everything about except the colour. Imagine my delight when I saw that you placed it between two twin beds, just as I am planning to do when I relocate my twins. Thank you for the visual – it looks great.

Love the room!! We just turned our garage into a large bedroom for our two boys and I’m still working on the decorating part b/c it’s so big! Love the colors and we were just in Ikea the other day looking at that same piece for between their beds (they only come in red and white now). Where did you get the large rug that goes between their beds? Thanks!!
Our boys would be ecstatic if they a big bedroom like that! Your boys are so lucky! The rug came from a local carpet shop. It was a remnant rug and they already had the edges bound. It looks like sisal from a distance, but it is easy to clean (unlike sisal). I got a comment from a lady the other day that ended up buying the white ikea cabinet and was able to get the same look. I’m pretty sure she sanded and primed it with gray metal primer before following the rest of the steps. Good luck with your boy’s room!!
